The Haitian actress Jacqueline Scott-Lemoine passed away

Jacqueline Scott-Lemoine, the Haitian actress and Senegalese of adoption, died Saturday in Dakar, at the age of 88.

Born on 28 October 1923 in Port-au-Prince, Jacqueline Scott, after his Bachelor’s degree, has been trained as an actress at the Centre d’art dramatique and to the Conservatoire d’art dramatique of Port-au-Prince. She discovers France, in 1950. After an internship at the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF), in 1960, she met Jean-Marie Serreau who offered her the role of the queen in “La tragédie du roi Christophe” of Aimé Césaire.

She married the poet Lucien Lemoine in 1964 and will tour Europe with the Compagnie du Toucan, before traveling in 1966 in Dakar to participate in the first Festival mondial des Arts nègres.

Member of the company of Théâtre National Daniel Sorano she made the heyday of this temple of the 4th Senegalese art during eighteen years in performing multiple roles under the guidance of famous directors like Maurice Sédar Senghor ((nephew of Léopold Sédar Senghor), Raymond Hermantier, Jean-Pierre Leurs… In 2005, the audience applauds the actress for the last time at the celebration of 40 years of the company in which she played the character of the Queen Mother in the play “L’Exil d’Alboury” of Cheik Aliou Ndao.

Became Senegalese citizen in 1976, Jacqueline Scott-Lemoine was decorated with several titles in her country of adoption, including those of Chevalier in the Ordre national des Palmes académiques, Officer in the order of Arts and letters, Grand Cross of the national order of Merit of Senegal, but also Knight of the French Legion of Honour…
