A vacationing NYPD detective was critically wounded in a gunfight in Miami Beach early Saturday morning.
Miami Beach police said the veteran first-grade detective encountered a suspect or group of suspects at 7 a.m. on an outside corridor of his hotel, and wound up trading several shots before he was hit.
The detective, whose name was not immediately released, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he spent several hours in surgery. His condition was not immediately known.
A local police spokeswoman said the shooting was not work-related.
No arrests were reported and the suspect or suspects remained at large by late afternoon.
The shooting occurred at an apartment unit at 1233 Lofts, a boutique hotel on Collins Ave. in the city’s trendy South Beach, an area known for its bars, restaurants and clubs.
The building itself is sandwiched between an empty parking lot and another apartment building.
Miami Beach Police Det. Vivian Hernandez said the shootout happened in an outside corridor within the property, “a sort of garden area near the entrance.”
Detectives investigating the shooting were questioning witnesses, but there did not appear to be any video surveillance cameras that caught the incident, she said.
The Miami Herald reported on its website that guests and employees in La Flora Hotel across from 1233 Lofts heard multiple, consecutive gunshots that sounded like they were shot from the same weapon.
An NYPD spokesman initially said the department was not aware of the shooting.
He later said that the department would not comment on a shooting in Miami. “It is not in our jurisdiction.”
