On Friday, Florida Highway Patrol officials said that the investigation into two accidents Sunday, one of which involved Alonzo Mourning, was still ongoing.
Both crashes occurred early Sunday morning.
Mourning, 41, was driving home to Coral Gables with his wife, Tracy, at 3 a.m. Sunday from the wedding of Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh at the Fontainebleau Hotel, when he crossed the Julia Tuttle Causeway and his blue 2010 Porsche Panamera S slid into one of two crashed cars in the middle of the highway, near the Interstate 95 intersection.
On Wednesday, Mourning told The Herald that he was hindered by “a blind spot” as the road rises and he braked right away. But Mourning said he could not avoid hitting a silver 2010 Audi A4 sitting next to another car, a 2001 Chevrolet overturned in the roadway.
The two drivers of the crashed cars — William J. Candelario, 21, and Sony Desir, 38, — had walked away from the prior crash and were standing by the side of the road. Neither men were hurt by Mourning’s car.
According to FHP, Mourning got out of his car and checked on the men, who told him they were OK and that they had already called police. Mourning went home, they called police, who told him to go back to the scene.
Mourning and his wife returned to the accident scene in Tracy Mourning’s SUV. She drove.
Candelario’s lawyer filed a civil suit Wednesday against Mourning, Desir and Traveler’s Commercial, which insures Candelario’s Audi.
The suit was filed on the eve of Zo’s Summer Groove, of the most important fund-raising events for Mourning’s philanthropic foundation.
