The Head of State stressed the importance of the reconstruction of downtown as a starting point, given its importance for the economic and tourism development of the country. It was also an opportunity for the President Martelly to recall the necessity to put the country under construction and create new poles of development.
Paul Emile Simon, the town planner, member of the Facilitation Committee, presented the major axes of the project of the revival of downtown. According to him, this reconstruction will be based on an administrative axis starting from the old Port du Roy until the Résidence du Gouverneur and another commercial axis, starting from the port, taking the Rue Traversière, crossing the market Hyppolite to emerge after the Rue Courbe on the old residential zone climbing to Bel-Air.
According to Charles Castel, the Governor of Central Bank the financing of these major projects “will be made initially and primarily from the $ 60 million of debt reduction of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which will be devoted to the reconstruction of the Legislative Palace, the Palace of Justice, Superior Court of Auditors and the town hall of Port-au-Prince.” On the other hand, the BRH will invest another “200 million for the reconstruction of more than 15 other buildings” said Mr. Castel, who argued that the reconstruction of Government buildings, with increased police security, will play a catalytic role for the private investment.
